SUMMER SAFETY TIPS

  

While summer and fun go hand in hand, it can also present some safety risks for your child. The Co-op City Department of Public Safety has put together some safety tips to help make your children’s summer a safe one.

        BIKE SAFETY

*Wear a helmet.

*Wear proper clothing.

*Check to make sure brakes, reflectors and tires
  are working properly.



        HOME SAFETY

*Always know where your children are.

*Help children learn important phone numbers.

*Know your children’s friends.



        INTERNET SAFETY

*Monitor your children while using the internet.

*Talk with your children about the benefits and risks
  of the internet.

*Keep the computer in a busy area of the house.

*Do not give out any personal information.

DEALING WITH STRANGERS

*Discuss what a stranger is to your children

*Teach children to trust their instincts

*Teach children “NO, GO, YELL, TELL”

WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY

*Make sure children know their full name, parent’s
  full name, address 
and phone numbers

*Explain to children that an emergency is a situation
  where they need the 
help of an officer, firefighter or
  a doctor. Teach children to dial 911.

*Post emergency numbers in the household, including
  work and cell
  phone numbers.
